Trained as an historian and a dramaturg, Joe often creates work inspired by historical events, real people and places, and other works of art, particularly music and visual art.  He also specializes in ethnodrama, having created nine scripts in this style and a chapter on the technique for The Handbook of Arts-Based Research (forthcoming 2016).


Since 2002 Joe has served on the faculty of the Program in Educational Theatre at New York University’s Steinhardt School, where he has received Steinhardt's Teaching Excellence Award, NYU's Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Faculty Award, and multiple Faculty Research Challenge Grants in Arts and Culture. He is a current member of the Dramatists Guild of America and the American Alliance for Theatre and Education, an Advisory Committee member for Evolve Theatre, and an alumnus of the Lincoln Center Directors Lab.
